Khan's Caravanserai - Small Caravanserai
Khan's Caravanserai - Small Caravanserai
The Khan's or Small Caravanserai, located in southern part of Icherisheher, is a monument of the 12th century.
The caravanserai, which has a rectangular shape in plan, consists of an internal rectangular courtyard and balconies located along the perimeter. The northern and southern entrances to the caravanserai are in the form of portals. In the Middle Ages, the main entrance was from the sea side. From the south, the facade of the caravanserai is two-story and resembles a defensive fortification. In the Middle Ages, the caravanserai from the side of the commercial street consisted of stalls that did not directly connect to the courtyard. Before that, this building served as a madrasa, which was part of the nearby Jame complex. Madrasa students (tullabs) both lived and studied in the cells opening onto the courtyard. Education in the madrasah was financed by the Jame's income.
