The two-story caravanserai, a 17th-century monument, was built by Gasim-bey Salimkhanov, one of the famous Baku beys.

The Salimkhanovs controlled most of the trade passing through the Baku port, and thus the necessary infrastructure was created in the Baku Fortress from the adjacent sides. Residential and non-residential buildings belonging to the Salimkhanovs occupied the entire southwestern part of the Baku Fortress. This caravanserai has two entrance gates. The caravanserai, which is rectangular in plan, has an octagonal closed courtyard. In the center of the courtyard is a water pool. Along the entire perimeter of the octagonal courtyard, there are 20 cells on the first floor and 22 on the second floor. However, while each room on the first floor has an arched balcony opening onto the closed courtyard in front of it, on the second floor this balcony connects all the rooms as a whole. Today, this space houses souvenir shops and the most prestigious restaurant in the city promoting Azerbaijani cuisine.
