Khoja-Bani Mosque

Khoja-Bani Mosque Khoja-Bani Mosque Khoja-Bani Mosque

The mosque is located north of the Shirvanshahs Palace Complex. A small inscription on the facade of the monument informs about the construction of the mosque by the architect Khoja-Bani in the 16th century. The central plan of the mosque is domed. Opposite the entrance is a large altar decorated with stalactites. Another inscription indicates that the mosque was restored in 1320 AH (= 1902).

During the renovation work carried out at the beginning of the 20th century, reconstruction work was carried out. At that time, a separate room for women (shabistan) and a corridor were added to the mosque building. 2 semicircular windows were opened in the central hall to enhance lighting. According to the opinion of Sh.S.Fatullayev-Figarov, academician of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, specialist in the history of architecture, despite the fact that the reconstruction work was carried out in accordance with European traditions, the interior and exterior of the mosque retained the style and motifs of the national, traditional architectural style. Thus, the conical dome of the mosque, built of stone and with a cube base, is similar to the typical Absheron domes. The decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan on historical and cultural monuments states that the Khoja-Bani Mosque is "a historical and cultural monument of national importance."
