Giley Mosque

Giley Mosque Giley Mosque Giley Mosque

The Giley Mosque, with its two domes and ornate lattice windows, is located at the top of the Baku Fortress. According to the inscription on it, the mosque was renovated in 1309 by the respected chairman Amin ad-Din Jumad Geray bin Bakr. Therefore, the construction date of the mosque is much older.

The name of the mosque is related to the name of the neighborhood in which it is located, that is, the people of Gilan who were engaged in silk trade. The length of the two-domed Giley Mosque is 14 meters and the width is 10 meters. The length of the later building, which was added to the old building of the mosque, is 11 meters. The semi-domed prayer hall of the mosque is in the shape of an equilateral cross and was formed into a square by means of small rooms in the corners. The plan of the building is in the form of a cross-dome composition. The mosque has deep domes and small rooms in the corners. The altar decorated with architectural elements gives the prayer hall a special beauty. The building built later not only does not harm the general structure of the plan, but also further expands the possibilities of the prayer hall. The crowned dome with an arrow, repeating the formed architectural atmosphere of the internal space, is directly included in the compositional structure of the monument. New forms expressing the European architectural style were applied here. In particular, this was clearly reflected in the construction of the facade of the mosque. The portal of the entrance to the mosque was decorated with a complex stalactite belt. On the southern side of the wall, on the cornice line, there is a stone lattice window decorated with an 8-pointed star and a cross. This composition, consisting of a star and a cross, was included in a frame, the upper part of which was completed with a complex arch. The beautiful stone carving pattern is complemented by a plant ornament.
