Quadrangular Tower
Quadrangular Tower
Tower and semicircular forts were an integral part of the defense system of medieval cities. The Quadrangular Tower was built in the 12th century near the eastern wall of the Baku Fortress, especially to resist the enemy from the north.
The main purpose of building a fortress-tower in medieval cities was to make the defense of the fortress walls more reliable, as well as to use the tower, which had a closed and large area, as an arsenal. The people also called the fortress "Jabbaxana" (weapons warehouse). The tower was designed for the convenient movement of soldiers in the inner part of the northern fortress walls. The arsenal is located above the underground road extending to the Double Gates. This location of the tower was intended to allow soldiers to easily enter and exit the arsenal underground to take weapons and ammunition. It is also possible that there was an underground road extending from the tower to the Palace of the Shirvanshahs or the Maiden Tower, and that the shah's family and close circle found refuge in this tower in case of danger. Inside one of the cylindrical corners of the fortress there is a spiral staircase leading to the upper floors, and on the southern wall, in the corner, there is a water well, which helped people stay in shelter inside the fortress for a long time. As masonry materials, kec and local limestone were used. The height of the castle is 16 meters, and the thickness of its walls is 2 meters.
