Urgent Measures Underway Following Partial Collapse of the Historic Fortress Wall

Following a partial collapse of a section of the fortress wall in the Icherisheher area, the Administration of the “Icherisheher” State Historical-Architectural Reserve has immediately undertaken оператив response measures.

Highly qualified specialists have been mobilized to the site. The expert team possesses extensive international experience and has also been involved in the restoration of several significant historical monuments in Azerbaijan. Among the projects they have worked on are the Maiden Tower, the Double Gates (Gosha Gala Gates), the Shirvanshahs’ Palace Complex, and other important landmarks.

In accordance with the current action plan, urgent conservation and stabilization measures will be carried out at the initial stage. These efforts aim to prevent further deformation of the damaged section and ensure the structural stability of the wall.

At the next stage, a detailed technical and engineering assessment will be conducted on-site. Based on the results of this evaluation, a scientifically grounded restoration of the damaged section of the fortress wall will be implemented.

It should be noted that this approach has been successfully applied in previous restoration projects carried out within the Icherisheher area.

The Administration of the “Icherisheher” State Historical-Architectural Reserve emphasizes that the preservation of the fortress walls—one of the country’s most important historical and cultural heritage assets—is a top priority. In recent years, partial restoration and conservation work has been systematically carried out on various sections of the walls. These efforts are currently ongoing within a phased plan and cover the section adjacent to the Ismailiyya Palace.

It should also be noted that no restoration or conservation interventions had previously been carried out at the junction of Towers No. 13 and 14, where the erosion occurred. The primary cause of the damage is humidity and natural erosion processes resulting from continuous atmospheric precipitation observed in recent days.

All restoration work will be conducted with high precision, exceptional care, and in accordance with international standards. The objective is to preserve the historical authenticity of the monument while ensuring its long-term structural stability.

The public will be regularly informed about the progress of the process.
